Temppeliaukio Church was inaugurated in 1969 as an Evangelical Lutheran church which soon turned into an internationally well-known architectural sight. It was designed by the architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, specialised in rock building. The church is hewn into the two billion-year-old bedrock on site and the rough rock walls are visible all around the church hall together with drill marks and holes made by man. The church hall is situated inside the rock but not underground. Above there is a magnificent copper dome which adds to the famous acoustics of the venue, together with 180 skylights that let the natural light in be it cloudy or with clear skies. There are guided tours and music performances available all through the year and in Temppis Shop you´ll find Temppeliaukio´s own souvenir collection.
